SBS Homecoming

This year, our homecoming celebration on Nov. 11 was held earlier in the day than usual, due to a change in the football television schedule. But even though the crowds were a little thin at 9 a.m., the SBS tent and the Shanty began to fill up by lunch time. It was a beautiful day, and the Wildcats enjoyed a stunning victory over the California Golden Bears!

Esther Capin was our homecoming chair this year. Capin is an SBS advisory board member and a Magellan Circle member and has supported both the Department of Psychology and the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies.

In 1975, Capin obtained a B.S. in psychology and an M.ed. in counseling and guidance from The University of Arizona. She was appointed to the Arizona Board of Regents in 1978 and served as its President in 1982 and 1991.

Capin was the first chair of the board of directors of the University Medical Center and continues to serve as a board member. She was the founding chair of the Arizona Advisory Committee on Health Education Centers (AZAHEC). She also serves on the advisory boards of the UA Colleges of Education and Fine Arts.
Our student speaker this year was Melissa Pitts, who is a senior with a double major in Latin American Studies/Spanish. Pitts has become increasingly interested in the political aspect of Central and South America. In her sophomore year, she studied abroad in Buenos Aires, and last summer she attended the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, México, and witnessed the controversial presidential elections.

Pitts is currently interning at the UA Office of Economic Development and working with the Inter-American Initiative, which promotes trade between Arizona and Chile. She is also interning with the Office of Study Abroad and Student Exchange and advises students who want to travel to Latin America.

After graduation, Pitts plans to work with a nongovernmental organization that promotes development in Latin America and, later, she would like to attend graduate school.

We would love for you to join us next year for our homecoming events! If you would like more information, please contact Edna Meza Aguirre, our associate development director, at 520-626-3454, ema1@u.arizona.edu.
